Java was developed by James Gosling in 1995 at Sun Micro Systems (Later acquired by Oracle). It was originally named Oak (after an oak tree), then green finally settling on Java (based on coffee). Four editions are available for building applications:

• Standard Edition (SE)
• Enterprise Edition (EE)
• Micro Edition (EE) - Designed for Mobile
• Java Card - Used in smart cards
